The Bearer of the Curse is actually the strongest for the mere reasons that he's the only protagonist with his very own OST and that his motion capture was done by Vergil from Devil May Cry.

(I'm not joking. Dan Southworth, Vergil's voice actor, was the main motion capture actor in Dark Souls 2 and its DLCs. He's listed in the game's credits, plus you can check everything on his IMDB page)

I agree on everything but it's a shame you don't include the Ashen One who challenges Gael. That version would be number 1 for sure considering they defeated and inherited... well... THE Dark Soul. In its strongest form no less since Gael had consumed everyone at the end of times

A Fun theory I wanna believe is that the Ashen One is Oscar

It makes his confrontation with Soul of Cinder which has the chosen undead far more meaningful for me

Ayo bruh using the Mahabre theme from Fear and Hunger in that last entry was wild, that immediately snapped my attention back the second I heard that first note hit.

Maybe I missed something, but what about the ashen one that didnt link the fire? While the fire linking ashes (both shown in the vid) prolong a broken order, the ash that would smother it would be stronger I think. Not just mentally, but stronger since this protagonist would have gone to the ringed city and killed gael and claimed the reunified dark soul with it. The other ashen ones would be just another cog in the cycle, since gael would still be the last being if they linked the fire. By this i mean that in the londor ending we “usurp” the fire, we don’t end it, we take its place. This ending still has the end point of being consumed by gael in his attempt to unify the dark soul in its original state, not in the state of it being tied to fire’s existence as it would remain being. The curse is just darkness chained by fire, so the londor ending still keeps the fire alive in a sense (we see it with the sky still having the sun). As such, the londor ending isn’t an ending of true unchained darkness like it would have come to be naturally, but rather of a chained darkness still encroached by the fire. My point is that the londor ending is not the same as the flame fading ending. To show this distinction, the path of the ash would change. The ashen one would come to realize that being the lord of hollows would not be returning humanity to its pigmy state, it would be chaining humanity to the curse placed upon them; or put another way, being the lord of hollows is keeping humanity cursed, just that we would not be slaves to the gods’ will anymore. Accepting the shackles of the gods would urk the ashen one so he would turn from the kiln and find a new path to the ringed city. Having understood that the cycle has to end, and that humanity must be freed of our curse, the painter ash would choose to become the furtive pigmy. He would find gael has taken the dark soul and fights to make to dark soul whole again. However, after doing so he finds that he cannot free the dark soul of the curse, for as long as humanity exists in its current state, the fire will always encircle it. He remembers the paintress and changes his plan. He returns to his past with the true dark soul in his possesion and prepares the fire keeper to smother the flame. The one way the curse could be broken is by letting the fire fade, or so he thinks. If his plan fails he makes a backup, he takes the dark infused blood of gael to the paintress. This blood is free of the curse, but still has the essence of dark in it, so it could make a painting, a world, of true darkness. He leaves and carries out the ending we know. This proposed interpretation of the ending would be the strongest one since we would become the furtive pigmy, a lord all others feared. However, this is just a headcannon made due to this ending being the only one that wasn’t ranked. As presented in game, the fire fades ending does not directly imply the ashen one became the bearer of the reunified dark soul, just that he let the flame fade. The in game ending would be weaker than #1 & #2, but stronger than the rest. Sorry for the long post lmao, just made me think, great vid!

My order goes like this:

1. Ashen One. They defeated Gael, who was an overpowered warrior as is, on top of being empowered by the full Dark Soul. They also gained full power of the Dark Mark, and absorbed the first flame. No other protagonist accomplished such feats. They also defeated the Nameless King, who had his divine powers still, unlike Gwyn.
2. Bearer of the curse. They're the one who managed to exit the futile cycle through the power of crowns. Gaining more power was also a big focus of that journey, and they gained it through defeating every shard of Manus, as well as kings, who were like DS protagonists in their own right.
3. The chosen undead. While they've defeated the OG Great Ones, all of them were heavily nerfed. Seath went insane, and even then he managed to canonically kill DS 1 protagonist. Chosen undead was forced to find Seath's very fragile weakness to defeat him. Chunk of Nito's power was stolen. Witch of Izalith was turned into a bug that died from a couple of hits. Gwyn after burning himself was nothing but a husk, who couldn't even use incantations, when it's his main weapon.
The most impressive feat of Chosen undead was defeating Manus, but it probably happened with assistance of medallion that negated his dark powers. Their endings are very basic, both of which are prolonging the pointless cycle, while protagonists of DS2 and DS3 did something unorthodox, with one exiting the cycle to continue theie journey, and another absorbing the first flame.
