Full conversation: The Skill That Looks Like Magic (But Isn’t...
"I am the mentalist who wishes he was a stand-up comedian."
Oz Pearlman is a mentalist and mind reader who finished in the top three on America's Got Talent and now performs for professional sports teams and Fortune 500 companies. In this chapter of his conversation with Ryan Hawk, he takes apart the part of his act that has nothing to do with mind reading. He explains why he studies stand-up comedy instead of other mentalists, what he actually did in the first ten seconds of walking into Ryan's studio, and why the first sentence of his own book is an admission that he cannot read minds at all.
You will learn:
❖ The difference between charisma and charm, and why only one of them is trainable
❖ The four unglamorous moves that separate you from 90 percent of the people in any room
❖ Why a stuck elevator makes strangers talk, and how to manufacture that on purpose
❖ What he prepares before a room that has nothing to do with his act
❖ Why the fix for nerves is lowering the stakes, not raising your confidence

"I've gotten stuck in an elevator with strangers for 30 seconds to 90 seconds. The elevator gets stuck, we're all looking around, we all realize what just happened, and suddenly there's this moment where the tension between us melts."
His whole method is manufacturing that moment on purpose. At a party where he knew nobody, he walked up to two strangers and said, "Do you guys know anybody? I don't know anybody here." That was it.
When was the last time you said the awkward thing out loud first, and what happened?
