Scientists Found the Most Welsh DNA Outside Wales — And It’s Not Where You Think

Scientists mapped the genetics of Britain — and the strongest Welsh-related connection outside modern Wales was not where most people would expect.

Not Patagonia. Not Cornwall. Not Brittany. Not even Liverpool.

In this video, we explore 11 places connected to Welsh ancestry, migration, ancient Brittonic populations, and the deeper genetic history of Britain. From the Welsh colony in Patagonia and the historic Welsh communities of Liverpool to Brittany, Cornwall, Cumbria, Roman-era Yorkshire, the Welsh Marches, and finally the communities immediately across the Welsh-English border, the story becomes much more complicated than simply asking where Welsh people migrated.

Research from the People of the British Isles project revealed that Wales contains some of the most distinctive population structure in Britain, with detectable differences even between North Wales and South Wales. Ancient DNA and modern population genetics also suggest that ancestry now strongly associated with Wales once extended much farther across Britain.

The real surprise is that the strongest Welsh-related continuity outside Wales may exist almost immediately across the modern border — because those populations were connected long before the border itself existed.

In this video:

11 — Patagonia
10 — London
9 — Liverpool & Merseyside
8 — Brittany
7 — Cornwall
6 — Devon
5 — Cumbria
4 — Yorkshire
3 — Western England
2 — The Marches: Shropshire & Herefordshire
1 — The Immediate Welsh-English Borderlands

We also explain why “Welsh DNA” is only shorthand, why there is no single “Celtic DNA,” how ancient Brittonic populations were distributed across Britain, and why modern national borders do not always match older genetic boundaries.

What was your first guess — Patagonia, Cornwall, Brittany, Liverpool, or somewhere else?

And if your family comes from Wales or the Welsh Marches, tell us the county in the comments.
