In September 2026, twenty-five Fields medalists signed a letter, "A Severe Misalignment of AI in Mathematics," warning that AI labs racing to solve famous problems put something at risk: the slow, human process through which a solution becomes understanding, and understanding gets passed on. Tim Gowers, himself a Fields medalist, shared the worry and didn't sign.

This video follows his reasons: a childhood detour through the cubes, a quarter-century-old essay about two cultures in mathematics, the case for learning from proofs you didn't find, and the question he couldn't get past: who will still want to spend the years? Along the way come the recommendations published on September 29 by the advisory group Gowers sits on alongside one of the letter's signers, including a section titled "Papers that are not yet understood by anybody." They are requests; nothing in them binds anyone.
