यह मूल रूप से 1899 में नासिक में बने 'मित्र मेला' नाम के संगठन का ही एक विस्तृत रूप था, जिसे 1904 में 'अभिनव भारत' नाम दिया गया। यह जुसेपे मेत्सिनी (Giuseppe Mazzini) के 'यंग इटली' से प्रेरित एक गुप्त क्रांतिकारी संगठन (secret revolutionary society) था।
मुख्य उद्देश्य और कार्य
सशस्त्र क्रांति (Armed Revolution): उनका मानना था कि अंग्रेजों को अहिंसा से नहीं, बल्कि हथियारों के बल पर ही भारत से भगाया जा सकता है।
हथियार और बम बनाना: संगठन के सदस्य विदेशों से हथियार मंगवाते थे और बम बनाने की तकनीक सीखते थे।
क्रांतिकारी साहित्य: देशभक्ति और क्रांति से जुड़ा साहित्य गुप्त रूप से छपवाया और बांटा जाता था।
उस वक्त क्या असर हुआ?
युवा वर्ग पर प्रभाव: इसने महाराष्ट्र और देश के दूसरे हिस्सों के युवाओं में अंग्रेजी हुकूमत के खिलाफ क्रांति की आग भड़काई। सैकड़ों क्रांतिकारी इससे जुड़े।
जैक्सन की हत्या (1909): अभिनव भारत के सदस्य अनंत लक्ष्मण कान्हेरे ने नासिक के कलेक्टर ए.एम.टी. जैक्सन (A.M.T. Jackson) की हत्या कर दी थी, क्योंकि उसने बाबाराव सावरकर को कालापानी की सजा सुनाई थी। इस घटना ने अंग्रेज सरकार को हिलाकर रख दिया।
नासिक षड्यंत्र केस (Nashik Conspiracy Case): जैक्सन हत्या कांड के बाद अंग्रेज सरकार ने अभिनव भारत पर बड़ा एक्शन लिया। वीर सावरकर को लंदन से गिरफ्तार करके भारत लाया गया और 50 साल के कालापानी (अंडमान जेल) की सजा दी गई।
सरकार की कार्रवाई: 1909-1910 के दौरान अंग्रेजों ने इस संगठन को कानूनी रूप से प्रतिबंधित (ban) कर दिया और इसके कई नेताओं को जेल भेज दिया।
संगठन पर प्रतिबंध लगने के बावजूद, अभिनव भारत ने भारत की आजादी की लड़ाई में क्रांतिकारी आंदोलन की बुनियाद को बेहद मजबूत किया था।
