Round 1:(magic circle) chain 3. crochet 14 double crochet into the magic circle,(close the magic circle), slip stitch into the 3rd chain (FIRST ROUND COMPLETE)

Round 2: Chain 5, (skip first chain), chain single crochet into the 2nd chain, half double crochet into the 3rd chain, double crochet into 4th chain, treble crochet into 5th chain, skip 2 stitches, and slip stitch into 3rd stitch, (REPEAT 4 MORE TIMES!!!), cut the first color yarn off and fasten it off (ROUND 2 COMPLETE)

Round 3:(make a slip knot with 2nd color yarn and attach to the tip of one of the points and make single crochet to attach) 1 half double Crochet,1 double crochet, 1 extended double Chrochet (At 11:41 if you don't know what that is), 2 treble crochets connected (at 12:09 if you don't know how), 1 extended double crochet,1 double crochet, 1 half double crochet, single crochet into the tip, 1 half double crochet, 1 double crochet, 1 extended double crochet, 2 trebles connected, 1 extended double crochet, 1 double crochet, 1 half double crochet, single crochet into the tip, at the end slip stitch in the first single crochet (REPEAR THESE EXACT STEPS FOR THE NEXT 2 OTHER SIDES!!!!!)

Round 4:chain 1, half double crochet into the same stitch,single crochet into next 3 stitches,half double crochet, double crochet,extended double crochet, ("corner"treble crochet-chain 2-treble stitch into the same treble stitch), extended double crochet ,double crochet,half double crochet, single crochet into next 3 stitches,half double crochet, double crochet, extended double crochet, ("corner"treble crochet-chain 2-treble stitch into the same treble stitch),extended double crochet, double crochet, half double crochet, single crochet into next 3 stitches,half double crochet,double crochet,extended double crochet,("corner"treble crochet-chain 2-treble stitch into the same treble stitch),extended double Chrochet,double crochet,half double crochet,single crochet into next 3 stitches, half double crochet, double crochet,extended double Chrochet,("corner"treble crochet-chain 2-treble stitch into the same treble stitch),extended double crochet, double crochet, slip stitch into first crochet of that round, (ROUND FOUR COMPLETE)

Here’s a written pattern using standard US abbreviations if anyone needs. I saw another one but this may be better for those familiar with abbreviations.

Rounds 1-2 are the star motif, rounds 3-5 are the background.

KEY BELOW 👇

“……..” = the first and second quote marks, respectively, show you where to start and stop a repeat section.

(….) = all stitches within the parentheses are worked into a single stitch or chain space.

Keep mind of notes placed in standard brackets […] they are not pattern stitches, just notes!!


BEGIN PATTERN

R1: MR, ch 3 [counts as a dc], 14 dc in MR. Carefully pull yarn tail tight to close MR. Slst to top of ch3


R2: “Ch 5. Skip first ch, [work in back bumps of the chain] make sc in second ch from hook, hdc next ch, dc in next ch, tr in final ch, skip 2 st, slst” …
Repeat “ to “ 4 more times, ensuring final slst is placed in the joining slst of the previous round.
Fasten off + cut yarn

Use a new colour for the background.

Place slip knot on hook, then enter the back loop of any skipped chain on any one of the POINTS of the star. No starting chain is made for this round.

R3 (BLO, BACK LOOP ONLY): “sc, hdc, dc, extended dc, tr2tog, extended dc, dc, hdc” …
Repeat from “ to “ until end of round, join with slst to first sc.

[BLO IS ONLY USED FOR ROUND 3]


R4: ch 1. In the stitch from which you just chained, place “hdc, sc next 3 st, hdc, dc, extended dc, (tr, ch 2, tr), extended dc, dc, hdc, sc next 3 st” …
Repeat from “ to “ until end of round, sl st to BOR hdc.


R5: ch 2 [Does NOT count as a dc]. In the stitch from which you just chained, dc 1, then dc in next 7 st up to corner [total of 8 dc]. Working within the corner chain space, “(dc 2, ch 2, dc 2), dc 11” …
Repeat from “ to “ three times, (dc2, ch2, dc 2), dc 3. Join to BOR dc [NOT the chains] with a slst. Fasten off and cut yarn

[Sorry for any errors. Please let me know if you spot any! I did change round 5 because I dislike using ch as starting Dc for final round; it usually creates an unsightly hole in my experience. Difference in starting chain length for round 5 is also personal preference—you can follow what is said in the video if you want for round 5 instead.]

if you're also getting a pentagon in round 4 like I did, make sure that you are only doing one single crochet per repeat in round 3! I thought the repeat was sc, hdc, dc, extended dc, tc2tog, extended dc, hdc, then ANOTHER sc. It's actually one sc per star tip, then repeat the hdc, dc, extended dc, tc2tog, extended dc, hdc between the star points. It should equal 8 stitches on each star side or 40 total stitches around for round 3.

I’m OBSESSED with this pattern!! TIP: I found it helpful to give the back loop of those stitches at the top of the star a little tug before starting round 3 with the new color. It made a HUGE difference and I didn’t have to fuss with them once I came across them in round 3
