An examination of iron sights versus pistol-mounted optics. Mostly intended to be listened to with some tangentially-related B-roll

Nice work, Justin!

The bit about optics being a separate, redundant sighting system shows my only issue with the COA. The rear sight is just part of the mounting hardware, so if something happens with the mount you don't necessarily have a working rear sight.

Feedback - Thanks for putting the content on YT as well as your blog. I always look forward to your posts and being able to listen rather than stop to read is a big plus!

This is solid. I listened to most of it, and agree with everything I heard; very concise too. Not sure I could have done a better job; and now having watched several of your video's you are probably a better shot than I am, but you are likely a decade + younger. Excellent point about the main advantage being for older eyes, and better/faster aiming at longer (~15m) distances. The training requirement is significant, as you pointed out. I'm generally of the opinion that quick reflex optics are ideal for larger pistols, and definitely PCC and general carbines, some rifles/shotguns too. But for micro pistols, I think optics become less useful the smaller the pistol is. A primary carry pistol about the size of P365 is where I would consider it at or beyond diminishing returns. Larger P365 like the XL or Xmacro make more sense, but the standard (micro P365, not as sure), and smaller pistols (i.e. Shield BG 2.0) very unlikely to be worth it. --- thanks for what you do, glad I kept watching your videos. Good work.

The debate may be over for YOU. But this old combat vet and former LEO has seen electronic sights fail WAAAAAY too many times to trust them in anything other than a game.
When you were talking about adjusting the dot size for accuracy at distance, it cracked me up. Good luck with that on the street.
We old guys advocated the KISS principle. Still do.
The day will come, hopefully on the range and not on the street, when you will present your pistol and the dot won't be there. Pretending iron sights are as fragile as dots is silly - and I know you know that.
Lastly, there is an old saying in the equestrian world - if you aren't falling off, you ain't riding enough. Well, if you haven't seen an optic fail, you ain't shooting enough. I've seen...
Dead batteries
fogged lenses
cracked lenses
Dirty lenses
loose mounts
dead circuits
dot turned up too bright
dot turned down too low
sun at a bad angle causing two dots
Knocked out of zero
not turned on
and more!
