Yes, I am familiar with this song, as is Dr. Amanda Stark - But since she's a seasoned voice scientist and we're releasing a new voice science course, we thought it prudent to analyze why "Don't Speak" is such a popular song, and what makes Gwen Stefani's voice tick.

Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she analyzes No Doubt for the first time, performing "Don't Speak”.

If you wanna hear Gwen turn her voice inside and out, listen to "Just a Girl"

@BrianMorin-t3c 10 months ago

Thank you both. No Doubt was a band that Gwen’s older brother started and she was just learning how to sing. After the break up and her brother leaving the band, Gwen became the show and her band mates had to deal with that issue. Gwen has discussed the early roots from their parent’s garage to suddenly going on a two year concert tour. Great watch ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

The two things represented by this song and video are;
1) Gwen was becoming the public face of the band. Very repented by the album cover of Tragic Kingdom.
2) She and the bass player, Tony Kanal, had been a long time couple and he was breaking up with her. I believe she did a masterful job of expressing her heartbreak through these lyrics.

The whole damn album is about her relationship with the bass player. That's why it's so fucking good.

Gwen Stefani has one of those voices that is so full of distinct personality, all those cries & swoops & a distinct, nasally vibrato all in a sol-cal accent, that it's instantly recognisable no matter what genre she's adopted this time. From Ska, to rock, pop, R&B, reggae & dancehall, she's a music chameleon but there's never any doubt it's her when you hear her.

As a teen boy in the 90s, I had a crush on Gwen Stefani.

The rotten orange at the beginning of the video does tie in to Orange county, the home of Disneyland. The name of the album is "Tragic Kingdom." On Wikipedia there is this commentary- The album is named after guitarist Tom Dumont's seventh-grade teacher's nickname for Disneyland, which is in Anaheim, California, where the band members grew up.[15] The album photography and portraits were taken by photographer fine artist Daniel Arsenault. Gwen is featured in the foreground while the rest of the band members are standing in an orange grove in the background

Can you imagine ANYONE on the planet breaking up with this gorgeous talented creature?!!!😮

I am a 60 year old man with absolutely no singing nor musical talent whatsoever.
I so enjoy your channel and how much more I appreciate the music that I have loved for decades and new appreciation for songs I had overlooked.
Thanks!!!

Tragic Kingdom was one of my first CDs and I listened to it so much. It's a masterpiece and I love the way Gwen's vibrato comes in and out.

@osckarq5211 10 months ago

That album is one of the best of the deccade

I love watching experts on random things nerd out about them. I moved on to a different career after being a professional bassoonist for many years, and this is how I feel when I randomly get to talk about classical music with someone.

Gwen Stefani is a very influential singer in a pop/rock world. Many younger female singers mentioned about Gwen as their influence.
For example, Tatiana from Jinjer said about it.
If we'd compare her clean voice with somebody Gwen Stefani comes in mind as a first reference probably.

7:47 - "The tongue went - BL-L-L-L-LL- for a moment..." That's the professional analysis we all need, because otherwise, well - we would never know. 🙃 But seriously, those little moments of your excitement are amazing. Thank you so much! ❤

Gwen has so many tools in her toolbox, and she plays them all so casually, it feels like it's effortless. This is mastery, her vocal performance brings me to tears again and again.

I like how Gwen transitions from her soft "little girl" voice to a Powerful, Red- Blooded Woman in the opening to the first chorus - Bart

For those who do not know Dr Amanda Stark is the head of the vocal research that Elizabeth and the University of Utah are doing on harsh vocals.

@Vontroll 10 months ago

The song IS about her break-up with the bass player. The video is about Gwen getting ALL the attention in the band

Ok, to REALLY feel No Doubt, MUST check out "Just a Girl" from the Conan show. I believe it's their first TV performance and it's amazing and the absolute best showcase of Gwen's unique style.
