How did a quiet Jordanian doctor become the center of one of the deadliest intelligence failures in CIA history?
This EON investigative documentary traces the rise of Dr. Humam Khalil al-Balawi, better known online as Abu Dujana al-Khorasani, and reconstructs the operation that culminated in the December 30, 2009 attack on Camp Chapman in Khost, Afghanistan.
Through declassified material, historical reporting, expert context and exclusive interviews from North Waziristan, the documentary follows Humam’s journey from Jordan to Pakistan’s tribal regions and examines how he convinced both Jordan’s General Intelligence Directorate (GID) and the CIA that he had penetrated Al-Qaeda’s senior leadership.
At the center of the story is a devastating intelligence gamble.
After being arrested in Jordan over his militant online activity, Humam was believed to have been turned into an asset. He was sent toward Al-Qaeda’s network with the hope that he could lead intelligence agencies to senior figures including Ayman al-Zawahiri.
Instead, according to the documentary’s reconstruction, Humam was running a far more dangerous double game.
As he moved through Peshawar, Bannu, Mir Ali and North Waziristan, he built credibility with his handlers while integrating himself into militant networks involving Al-Qaeda, Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan and the Haqqani environment.
The film also examines the role of figures such as Atiyah Abd al-Rahman and Qari Hussain, and how selective intelligence, long silences, photographic proof and carefully managed communication gradually convinced his handlers that a major breakthrough was within reach.
That trust ultimately brought Humam inside Camp Chapman without a full search.
What followed became one of the most consequential counterintelligence disasters of the post-9/11 era.

The story of Humam al-Balawi is not just about one operative. It is about trust, intelligence failure, asymmetric warfare, competing state interests and the limits of counterterrorism in one of the most complex conflict zones in the world.

Particularly on the whole situation in the country and the world right now.
However, I did witness and learn certain things about him during that period.
I also spoke with Qari Hussain, who claimed that Abu Dujana had been sent as a suicide fadayee attacker to target the Americans at Khost Base. I jokingly questioned his claim, but he insisted, “You will know what we have done.”
I asked him to record the claim in audio. He did so on my Samsung A73, and I later shared the recording by telephone while reporting for the Associated Press.
Best of luck for future guys. Lots of prayers
