I spent a fortune—about $2,000—starting my luthier business, and I didn't have anything left to buy another $200 worth of gear from StewMac; thanks for saving me.

🟩Cut a fine tooth hacksaw blade into 4 pieces, use the pieces for width adjustment. Cuts marvelously. Will last your lifetime.

Put the wound guitar string in a jeweler's saw frame, tighten it, and it will give you more control. Also put the file(s) in a 2 1/2" cabinet hinge, and hold them in the with bolts an nuts through the hinge holes. You can fashion a handle by running a bolt longways through the hinge and attaching it to a wooden handle, but it's really not necessary. You'll have enough control with just the pressure of your hand. Hope this helps. Have nut files, but will make some with feeler gauges to see how they work. Thanks for the post.

You just saved a lot of people a lot of money. Thank you...Harbor freight has a whole set of gauges for $5, and rotary tool (dremel) inexpensive too. Worth a subscription to your channel also amigo.

Great idea! I always used tip cleaners, after staring the slots just like you do. Might make a few of these today! Thanks!

I made some files from feeler gauge blades and the results surprised me. Saved me a bunch of money. I went from .009 all the way up to .030(?) My teeth weren't perfectly spaced, but what the hell, the idea worked great. This was done on a cheap Chinese set of feeler gauges which worked fine. Thanks for this tip. Also see 2022 GAL journal, which one I don't know. but it shows the little nut file handle I made out of a cabinet hinge. Hinge, nuts, and bolts were about $7 or $8. I used knurled brass nuts, but regular nuts will work.

Yeah, its good that you show us this. Thanks. I already have a set of the correct feeler gauges as recommended. They were my Dad's when he were a farmer. Now I'M 78 and I can use the gage for something real.
