The monkey mountain exhibit was closed for construction from September 1 to September 18.
It is scheduled for further construction from September 24 to October 9.
Punch-kun is a Japanese macaque born on July 26, 2025.
He began living at the monkey mountain in Ichikawa City Zoo & Botanical Garden on January 19, 2026.
Although he has a mother, she abandoned him—likely due to the summer heat and the fact that it was her first birth.
Keepers initially raised Punch-kun, as he could not survive on his own. However, deciding that constant hand-rearing wouldn't be in his best interest, they released him into the monkey mountain enclosure on January 19, 2026, to monitor his progress.
When he first arrived, he was bullied by various older monkeys but endured it bravely; watching him grow little by little was truly inspiring.
As for the orangutan plushie Punch-kun carries ("Orangutan Mom"): Japanese macaques, like humans, grow up being raised by their mothers, and the absence of a mother causes stress. Keepers gave him an IKEA orangutan plushie, which he began to cuddle.
It seems he did the same thing in the past when given a Rilakkuma plushie.
That other monkey (Otome-chan) reportedly let go of her plushie and became independent at around 14 months old, so Punch-kun might also let go of "Orangutan Mom" in a few months. By the way, did you know Otome-chan is also at the same zoo?
She became a huge hit worldwide, capturing hearts with her adorable appearance as she cuddled her orangutan plushie.
