THE DRAGUNOV WAS NEVER BUILT FOR A LONE SNIPER

The Dragunov SVD is usually imagined as the weapon of a lone sniper waiting for one perfect shot. Its actual Soviet battlefield role was broader.

Adopted in 1963, the SVD gave ordinary infantry formations accurate, self-loading fire beyond the comfortable range of the AK. Its 7.62×54R cartridge, ten-round magazine, lightweight construction and four-power PSO-1 optic allowed a trained marksman to identify important targets and make rapid follow-up shots while remaining close to his platoon.

This military history documentary explores Yevgeny Dragunov’s background, the S-49 target rifle, the SVD’s operating system, its ammunition, the PSO-1 optic and its place within Soviet motor-rifle units. It also explains the differences between the real SVD and similar-looking rifles such as the Romanian PSL, Yugoslav M76 and Chinese Type 79.

The SVD really was a sniper rifle—but Soviet doctrine expected it to do more than make rare extreme-range shots. It made precision fire a routine capability within the infantry formation.

Watch until the end to discover why the SVD’s greatest achievement was making additional reach available exactly when the platoon needed it.
