A summer night in Nara, Japan — and our two kids looking for stag beetles.
In the evening we drove up into the hills and cooked pasta in one pan inside the camper. Dinner at eight, and by nine we were walking into a dark park with flashlights — a summer ritual Japanese children have kept for generations. They found one. We had no soil, so branches went into the case to make a home for the night, and in the morning that case was the first thing our son went to see.
Almost no talking — the burner, the night woods, and a few small voices.

📌 Chapters
00:00 Intro
00:24 A summer evening.
00:44 Today is the day we go looking for stag beetles. One of the kids' summer dreams.
01:10 Before the hunt begins, dinner gets made inside the van.
02:00 Fewer dishes to wash is always better. Same at home, same in the van.
04:28 A while when only the flame makes a sound.
05:18 Pasta from a single pan. Almost ready.
05:42 The kids came back hungry.
06:03 Four years between big sister and little brother. Some days the best of friends, some days at war.
06:18 Not long ago he was still like a baby. Children grow up so quickly it takes my breath away.
07:00 Time to say itadakimasu.
07:20 My daughter always eats with a good appetite. My son has never been very interested in food,
07:35 lately I noticed he now feeds himself more often than he used to.
07:50 I catch myself saying, "Just eat by yourself."
08:40 but I want to hold on to these words: one day these ordinary days will shine.
09:12 He copies his big sister in everything. If she can do it, he's sure he can too.
09:35 Another dinner where the laughing never stops.
11:05 Lights on, into the dark park.
11:50 The kids search with everything they have, like hunting for treasure.
12:10 At last — a stag beetle. The kids are beside themselves.
12:39 "Time to head back," I say — but their feet won't stop.
13:38 A small life, right here. A family of swallows, asleep.
14:00 This one, too, we watch gently.
14:30 Back in the camper, we can breathe again. No soil, so branches go in the box — a home for tonight.
15:40 Morning came. Even at the roadside station, stag and rhinoceros beetles.
17:23 A "Beware of snakes" sign gives me a jolt.
18:02 Look up, and there's the summer sky.
18:22 Carp in the pond. They sell feed here, so you can feed them.
18:42 After a short rest, the exploring starts all over again.
