James Holland and Al Murray visit the Poteau Crossroads, where in December 1944 Kampfgruppe Hansen overran the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion, an all-Black American unit, capturing and killing men in one of the most overlooked clashes of the Battle of the Bulge. They then defeated Task Force Maze, securing two rare German tactical victories in the Ardennes.

But these brief successes were quickly seized upon by Joseph Goebbels’ propaganda machine, which used the footage to suggest the Wehrmacht was still winning the war. In reality, Germany was only months away from total defeat.

This episode explores the actions of Kampfgruppe Hansen and the 1st SS Panzer Corps, and how fleeting battlefield wins were transformed into a myth of German invincibility during the final stages of World War II.
