Zen is not an education or a philosophy or a religion. It’s a way of life.

I was in the stage of great doubt for many years. Recently I became free. No more doubts. Everything makes sense

TLDR: Zen Buddhism teaches us to trust in the natural order of our mind and body, and to return to a childlike spontaneity, in order to cure the disease caused by civilization and achieve a sudden awakening.
1. 00:00 🧘 Zen and Buddhism go beyond language and cannot be fully explained in words, as life's complexity transcends syntax and grammar.
1.1 Zen and Buddhism cannot be fully understood through words, as the real basis is an experience beyond language.
1.2 Life cannot be explained in words because the order of the world is much more complex than the simple order of syntax and grammar.
2. 03:33 🧘 Life cannot be fully understood or described in words, as it is indeterminate and follows the natural order of "Li" rather than the written order of "sir" in the Chinese language.
2.1 The Chinese language has two terms for different orders: "sir" refers to the order of things as written down, while "Li" refers to the actual order of nature, like the markings in Jade or the grain in wood.
2.2 Life is indeterminate and cannot be fully understood or described in words.
3. 05:48 🧘 Zen Buddhism teaches us to understand our basic nature and rely on our spontaneous functioning, as we cannot fully understand the complexity of our bodies and brains.
3.1 The order of the infinite complexity of organic pattern is also the order of our own bodies and brains, which we rely on for everything we do, even though we can't fully understand or describe it in words.
3.2 Zen Buddhism is about understanding our basic nature and seeing into our own nature, as we are taught to rely on our spontaneous functioning and to figure everything out.
4. 08:32 🧘♂ Society teaches us to develop a second self that rationalizes our actions, leading to self-consciousness, but great people return to a childlike spontaneity.
4.1 We are taught to behave consistently and develop a second self that observes and rationalizes our actions, influenced by literature and societal expectations.
4.2 Our reactions to others are often influenced by their opinions, leading us to internalize a second self that constantly comments on our actions, causing us to become self-conscious and lose our spontaneity.
4.3 People lose their naturalness and spontaneity by trying to fit into societal expectations, but great people return to a childlike lightness and freshness where they don't care about others' opinions.
5. 12:25 🧘 Zen aims to cure the disease caused by civilization by removing self-consciousness and restoring naturalness through nonsensical responses to philosophical questions.
5.1 The process of educating people is like a procrustean bed, involving warping of our nature, but Zen and Buddhism aim to cure this disease caused by civilization.
5.2 Zen aims to remove self-consciousness and restore naturalness, as demonstrated by Zen masters' spontaneous and unconventional responses to questions.
5.3 The discipline of Zen is reflected in nonsensical responses to philosophical questions, emphasizing the importance of experiencing the present moment.
6. 16:06 🧘 Zen is about trusting in the natural order of our mind and body, with monasteries providing a space for training.
6.1 The answer comes from the order of nature.
6.2 Zen is about learning to act spontaneously and trusting in the natural functioning of our own mind and body, with Zen monasteries providing a protected area for this training.
7. 18:47 🧘 Zen master has nothing to teach, tests sincerity of prospective students, asks questions instead of teaching.
7.1 The Zen master has nothing to teach, no system of doctrine, and a peculiar serenity and lack of self-consciousness.
7.2 A prospective student comes to a Zen monastery and is tested for sincerity before being admitted to study with the master, who asks questions rather than teaching.
8. 22:05 🧘 The monk demonstrates their genuine self through natural acts, leading to doubt and hesitation, which ultimately leads to a sudden awakening in Zen.
8.1 The monk must demonstrate their genuine self through natural acts, rather than intellectual answers, in the presence of the master.
8.2 A student is challenged by a master to answer a question about his original nature, leading to doubt and hesitation.
8.3 Doubt and lack of confidence lead to a sudden awakening in Zen, where the observing self dissolves and everything becomes right.

this video was really insightful and i appreciate the depth of alan watts' teachings. however, i can't help but wonder if the strict discipline of zen might actually limit personal expression for some people. isn’t there a risk of too much structure stifling creativity?
