Horror gaming retrospective on Septentrion: Out of the Blue. A PS1 survival horror experience that completely missed the mark on being fun, after taking inspiration from Resident Evil and other retro horror titles.
I present to you this forgotten jank. Low poly graphics, tank controls aren't enough to save games with a broken enough design philosophy.

0:00 Uncovering a forgotten “gem”
3:00 Disaster aboard the KingWeenzer
12:46 The Shaking
22:10 Nigel fixes the basement
29:20 Gergardt meets Miss Lena

58:02 Gerhardt and the stragglers
1:23:18 Why am I playing this again

"a little girl playing with a scale model of the ship" and its literally a scale made to look like a small version of the ship is an Airplane! level visual gag to start your disaster game on

I found the Japanese manual after about two minutes of searching. The coins are for continuing when your character dies.

When it was revealed that some mystery company paid for 80% of the costs for the ship I thought it was going to be that the ship was being sunk as an insurance fraud scheme.

That second playthrough is like trying desperately to find a solution to the Trolley Problem that kills all six people.

Hears the voices: Oh its so bad.
Sees giant fan fly into woman: Oh its gonna be so good.
Glad I randomly clicked this. This was a good time

I guess it makes sense for the main character to the Dipper as his health bar when you consider his role in the story is guiding people to safety
P.s. And his job on the ship is navigator

"There's no use for the crouch in the entire game. Also the first guy you rescue, you do so by crouching."

I like to believe that that was your way of saying that you wished you'd left him to die lol

I'm guessing the many identical rooms were made so you can duck into them during the shaking.

as a boat enthusiast and an Old Janky-Ass Game enthusiast, i could not be more charmed by the entire concept of this game. there's so much heart and love put into a total piece of shit. a glorious disaster. i'm so happy you shared this with us

I'm not even sure what Long's plan was. Dump a bunch of parasites into the ocean? At best he'd only manage to kill everyone on the ship, at worst the parasites would get into the drinking water and indiscriminately kill everyone, ESPECIALLY poor people, and leave the rich largely unscathed as they buy expensive water filters and shit. Was it just about killing everyone on board because they're, he assumes, rich? The people who he's mad at don't go on cruises, they have private yachts! And even so, what about the crew? Just fuck them I guess?

@enderkatze6129 7 months ago

Honestly I was expecting the story to go in the direction of "everyone on board is infected and you gotta kill everyone so the parasite doesn't spread"

No one on this ship knows how to navigate stairs apparently

There's jank in gameplay, there's jank in the translation, there's jank in the story. There's jank everywhere. It's all jank.

The sinking of the King Weenzer was such a tragedy

I love the antagonist's presumably usamerican dead dad who wasnt allowed to enter a hospital when he got injured. Oh we're allowed in hospitals, we just die from heart attacks when we recieve the bill and it's $10k for like.. one night on a cot and a single band-aid
