I visited Nikko Toshogu Shrine, a World Heritage Site.

Nikko Toshogu Shrine, dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, is a representative historical site of Japan, captivating visitors with its magnificent architectural beauty and numerous sculptures.

The stone torii gate, which can be considered the entrance to Toshogu Shrine,

The massive torii gate, built from stone transported all the way from Kyushu, the five-story pagoda, and the famous "see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil" monkeys.

Furthermore, I visited the "imaginary elephant," painted based on imagination in an era when real elephants had never been seen, and the overwhelmingly impressive National Treasure, Yomeimon Gate.

At Yomeimon Gate, along with the many magnificent carvings, I also looked for the "inverted pillar," which is said to have been intentionally left partially unfinished.

And another must-see is the "sleeping cat."

After admiring its small form, I finally headed to the inner shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu.

What awaited me was 207 stone steps.

As you climb step by step, a world of silence unfolds, enveloped in cedar trees, a stark contrast to the ornate shrines you just passed.

Beyond that lies the inner sanctuary, associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu.

It is said that before his death, Ieyasu bequeathed that his body be buried at Kunozan, and that after the first anniversary of his death, a shrine be built in Nikko to enshrine him as a god.

This is the grand story of Tokugawa Ieyasu, connecting Kunozan to Nikko.

We will slowly explore Nikko Toshogu Shrine, where over 400 years of history breathes, offering more than just magnificent architectural beauty.
