As a 70 year lifetime Wichita resident and a bit knowledge of Wichitas history.  Finally somebody gets it right.  If I’m not mistaken, I think there only one shooting in height Wichita’s history as a cowtown.  If memory serves me, the dispute was between a saloon keeper and out of control drunk cowboy.  There were strict rules about armed cowboys or anybody else.  At that time the cities business center for ladies and gentlemen was on the east side of the Arkansas River. On the west bank was the saloons and hotels for the cowboys.  Rarely did they ever mix.  Wichita eventually tired of the cowboys sent them packing to Dodge City.

By the way Wichita has an authentic Cowtown museum, 50+ furnished buildings open to public dated 1865-1885.  The museum is fully staffed with volunteer reenactors living and working in Wichita.  I believe cost is $12 per person with the exception of small kids.  Definitely a worthwhile visit.

Nice video

In all the Western movies you can watch, you will never see any horse poop on the streets!

In the Old West, far more people died from accident, injury and disease than were murdered.

Hollywood is still feeding us BS.

I saw an interview of an old cowboy who had been o cattle drives from Texas to the rail head in Kansas.   He was asked,  "Sir what can you tell us about being a cowboy back then?"  He took his time and said.
" It was damned few money and a hell  of a lot of beans".   Not exactly poetry, but that's is about all the History you need to get the picture.

One of the legacies of Hollywood westerns is that they have taught many of us that guns are the solution to all our problems..

You can start at 3:00. . . you’re welcome.

Everything I know about the wild west, I learned from Blazing Saddles

Jesse James, Billy the Kid, Wyatt Earp, Texas Rangers, Judge Roy Bean...

If you get your historical knowledge from TV shows and movies then you get what you deserve. The entertainment industry has never exactly had a choke hold on the truth. Their job is to entertain, not educate us.

You are more likely to get shot in today's wild west than back in the old wild west.:face-orange-frowning:

I'm a history nut. I also dable in leatherwork. I looked into holsters used in the old west. The lowslung quick draw holster is Hollywood. Can you imagine a right handed shooter wearing a low holster on his right thigh trying to get on and off a horse dozens of times a day lugging a 3 or 4 pound cap and ball pistol like that? He would spend most of his time picking up his gun after if fell in the dirt.
Hollywood didn't think a cowboy hat should have a cord for holding it on.  Many cowboy hats had a stampeed string to keep the hat on. If you lost your hat at night while tryig to stop a stampeed (which seemed to happen regularly) you would be in deep dodo when the sun was shining. You needed your hat.
The list goes on and on.

Hollywood has had too much influence on our perception of history.

Comparing 21st century BIG cities murder rates to a small town in the west is absurd. 3 homicides in one year for a town of 3K people is very HIGH, much higher than the murder rate of every notorious high-crime big city today.

I lived in the middle of nowhere in New Mexico in the mid-seventies. A very old man came to make repairs on some structures and I struck up a conversation which turned to the old west and I asked how could cowboys even afford to practice shooting when bullets were so expensive. He told me his father had been a ranch hand and each cowboy was issued boxes of ammunition by the owner and they were expected to practice with all of it because they were effectively the local police and militia. He told me he only saw his father shoot once and it was during a July fourth celebration, his father had a few drinks and the kids asked him to get out the old pistol. After much coaxing he strapped on the pistol and told the kids to throw out a can, which he hit, which I found amazing, but the old man said his father never drew the pistol, but instead bent the soft holster firing from the hip. I believed him.

20:55 Love the 48-star flag in this 1950's western.

Agree with Doug about hybrid trend.

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Have you ever noticed all the signage in old west photos, signs everywhere, professionally painted with variety of fonts?  Hats off to the sign painters that have NEVER been featured in any video I have ever seen.
