We visited Hollandse Hoogtes to tour, with Benji Atomik, the cultivation director, a facility with approximately 3,500 lights, built according to the new regulated Dutch model.
On this comprehensive tour, we learned about the entire process from start to finish: from research, genetic selection, and propagation to flowering, post-harvest, manufacturing, and the finished product.
We began in the R&D, sensory evaluation, and laboratory areas, where the team analyzes flowers and extracts, develops selections in collaboration with Karma Genetics, and works on preserving genetic material through tissue culture.
Next, we toured the mother plant, clone, and vegetative rooms to learn how they organize propagation, prepare the blocks, and manage irrigation before transferring the plants to the flowering stage.
Inside the production rooms, Benji explained how they adapt cultivation strategies to each strain, how they prepare and validate each space, and what differences they find between working under LED and HPS lighting. We also discussed PPFD, VPD, canopy management, pruning, defoliation, and environmental prevention and control.
The tour continued through the drying and curing areas, where temperature, humidity, and time are controlled to preserve the quality developed during cultivation.
Finally, we entered the trimming, grading, and automated packaging areas; we visited the Hash Lab, the kitchen, and the pre-roll line, which has the capacity to produce approximately 18,000 units per day. We also learned how traceability works from the plant to the coffee shop.
To conclude, we visited the water and nutrient room, where the filtration, dosing, and treatment necessary to supply an operation of this scale are carried out. Benji explained how they integrate Athena Pro Line, Cleanse, and Balance to simplify management and maintain consistency across the different rooms.
