The Fifteen Billion Pound Railway
The Fifteen Billion Pound Railway documents the extraordinary effort behind the construction of London’s newest underground railway, Crossrail, later known as the Elizabeth Line. Across the series, engineers and construction teams race against time to deliver ten vast new stations beneath one of the world’s busiest cities.
At Canary Wharf, a team assembles a cathedral-sized station so large it must be built inside a dock and submerged underwater. Its architect-designed roof arrives as a kit of more than 2,500 individual components. Elsewhere, as crews excavate deep underground caverns for new stations, they uncover unsettling traces of London’s past—grim reminders of the city’s long and complex history.
The following episode focuses on the final push to complete the Elizabeth Line, a project with a £15 billion price tag and one of the largest engineering undertakings in Europe. With the opening date approaching in May 2017, pressure mounts across every site.
At Paddington, engineers construct a new station and install a 130-metre glass canopy that must connect seamlessly to Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s Grade I-listed station—an operation requiring extreme precision. At Tottenham Court Road, teams build platforms and concourses the size of an aircraft carrier beneath one of the world’s busiest shopping districts, while convoys of concrete trucks navigate Oxford Street amid half a million daily visitors.
Beyond London, in Derby, a father-and-son team—third and fourth generation train builders—race to manufacture sixty-six new trains to serve the 30-mile route. As deadlines loom, every engineer, site, and supplier must work in unison to ensure the railway is delivered on time and ready to carry its first passengers.
