Louisiana teal hunting doesn’t always go according to plan. For Hunt 4 of #ROADSHOW26, we headed deep into the Louisiana marsh for an early teal season hunt that forced us to change plans, fight through endless marsh mud, and make one final move to find the X.

After flying into New Orleans, we hit the water to scout the marsh and find birds for the following morning. We had a plan, but thick floating grass kept our mud boats from reaching the area we wanted to hunt. With daylight quickly approaching, we were forced to set up short of where the teal wanted to be. We scratched out a few birds, but it was obvious we needed to make an adjustment.

After the hunt, we went back to scouting. The birds were working an area roughly 500 yards away that we couldn’t reach by boat, so we used onX Hunt to map out the most efficient route, parked the boats on a levee, and walked into the marsh to find a small pocket of water that looked promising.

Getting there the next morning with all of our hunting gear wasn’t going to be easy, but with only one morning left in Louisiana, we knew we had to make it happen.

With a plan in place, we headed south to Venice, Louisiana, launched the boat, and spent the afternoon fishing. The fish were biting at nearly every stop. We caught plenty of redfish and black drum along with a few flounder, put some Louisiana reds in the box, cleaned our catch, and headed back to get ready for one last teal hunt.

The next morning, we motored back into the marsh and started the long walk in the dark. Deep mud, heat, mosquitoes, alligators, and all of our gear made for a brutal trek, but once shooting time arrived, we knew the work had paid off.

We had finally found the X.

Louisiana teal started working the decoys up close and personal, and it didn’t take long to finish our three-man limit. After everything that went wrong the morning before, watching the plan come together made this one that much sweeter.

From scouting the Louisiana marsh and running mud boats to redfish, alligators, and an unforgettable early season teal hunt, this stop had a little bit of everything.
