G'day, adventurers! It's Trip 42 and we're finally hitting the legendary Gibb River Road in the Kimberley! π€© This week, we're kicking off the epic 4WD track in style at the sprawling El Questro Wilderness Park β 700,000 acres of gorges, rivers, and rugged beauty.
Get ready for some serious off-road action and breathtaking views as we tackle the tracks to the lookouts and gorges.
In this episode, you'll see us explore:
Pigeon Hole Lookout: A rewarding 4WD track leads us to this stunning viewpoint, offering one of the most iconic views on the Gibb River Road: the majestic Cockburn Range dominating the horizon above the meandering Pentecost River. We capture the magic as the late afternoon sun paints the cliffs in fiery red and orange hues.
Branco's Lookout: We take on the challenging 4WD track and a fun, rocky crossing of the Chamberlain River to reach El Questro's highest lookout. The panoramic views back over the station and the Cockburn Ranges are simply unforgettableβa perfect spot for sunset!
Zebedee Springs: Our well-deserved morning chill-out! We take the short walk into this magical oasis to soak in the series of natural thermal pools (usually 28-32Β°C) nestled beneath a canopy of pre-historic Livistona palms. It's the perfect way to soothe those Gibb River Road corrugation aches! (Remember, Zebedee is open to the public from 7 am to 12 pm only, so get in early!)
El Questro Gorge: We brave one of the Kimberley's more challenging hikes! The initial walk is easy, but we push past the halfway pool, wading through the crystal-clear water and clambering over boulders and rocks in the narrow, fern-lined gorge. The reward? A stunning, hidden swimming hole and small waterfall at the end. An absolute must-do for the fit and adventurous!
Emma Gorge: We tackle the 3.2km return walk over rocky terrain, creek beds, and some tricky sections to reach this spectacular horse-shoe shaped gorge. The reward is the 65-metre droplet waterfall plunging into a deep, bracingly cold pool surrounded by towering red cliffs. We even seek out the tiny thermal spring trickle near the edge of the pool for a little natural warmth! Allow about 3 hours for the walk and a swim.
Staying at El Questro Station:
We set up camp at the main El Questro Station Campground, right on the banks of the Pentecost River. The campground offers powered and unpowered sites with great facilities. After a big day of 4WDing and hiking, we hit the famous Swinging Arm Bar for happy hour, a massive burger, and a few cold ones. It's the ultimate outback station atmosphere!
Visitor Pass/Costs:
To access all the amazing gorges and lookouts at El Questro (including Emma Gorge), you need a Wilderness Park Permit.
Approximate current costs (check current prices on arrival): A 7-Day Pass is approximately $26 per adult and $13 per child (A day pass may also be available for slightly less). Camping/Accommodation fees are separate.
More to do at El Questro (Highly Recommended!):
Chamberlain Gorge Cruise: A guided boat cruise up the 3km long waterhole to see amazing cliffs and Aboriginal rock art. (No swimming, as it's a known saltwater crocodile habitat!)
Barramundi Fishing: Try your luck fishing in the river system (be croc-aware!).
Scenic Flight: Splurge on a helicopter flight over the Cockburn Ranges for an unbeatable perspective.
Buckle up, drop a like, and subscribe for more Kimberley adventures as we continue along the Gibb River Road! ππ¨
