These are the best horror novels of all time, at least according to me. After years of horror book recommendations, deep dives, and late-night reading sessions, I'm finally ranking my personal top 12 horror books. Not the most popular. Not the most hyped. But the ones that have stayed with me.

There are no spoilers, just a brief synopsis for each book, why they might be right for you, and why I love these particular horror reads. This list spans psychological horror, cosmic horror, body horror, supernatural horror, and everything in between. Whether you're a lifelong horror reader or just getting into the genre, there's something on this list for you.

Bradbury is like reading a song. His books have a beautiful melody.

Salems Lot by Stephen King kept me up at night. I was a teenager back then but I think it was still keep me up at 64

What I love about the novel The Shining is you gradually feel Jack slowly losing his mind. Where as in the movie it’s like an overnight switch. The book was dread creeping up and led to a more impactful ending

Speaking of Shirly Jackson, We Have Always Lived in the Castle was another eerie book by her. I also loved Straub's Ghost Story. King's IT grabbed me on the first page. The Shining was excellent, too; the playground terrified me. My favorites all establish a foreboding mood.

The Shining is definitely my favorite horror novel of all time. While I love what the movie does with the maze, the climax in the book is so emotionally good. IYKYK

THE MONKEYS PAW by WW Jacobs, short story that scared the cr*p out of me! Be VERY careful what you wish.

It’s got to be Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. But horror doesn’t have the same effect it did years ago. Also Dracula and The Exorcist. I’m very old school. 🥴

Brian Lumley's Necroscope series.

Great list! Swan Song. Let The Right One In is top ten for me. I prefer We Have Always Lived In The Castle, a favorite of mine. Something Wicked This Way Comes is a gorgeous horror novel, stunning prose. OK, you have me intrigued by The Library at Mount Char- sounds bloody amazing! I would rate The Shining as King's most terrifying novel. Agree, it is about Jack's alcoholism, unravelling and descent into madness that is the scariest part of the novel. I think it scared King too.

Not novels, but first hearing Wailing Well by M.R. James maybe a year or two ago from an archived BBC series, specifically the end where it zooms in on the framed photograph of the scouts as the score trails off into the copyright info, is such a special thing.

It felt like the type of story my grandfather would tell me as a kid, but more detailed, without losing any of the campy feel that almost enhances the unsettling feel of it.

And the description of a face coming out from a bush in his other story, The Rose Garden, is done in a way in the story where it just sounds creepy with the comparison used. I won’t spoil it, but it’s a very British thing to compare a spooky face to, and it’s very effective in illustrating it.

Just short little spooky stories. Absolutely great.

Unfortunately, I don’t really have any recommendations for many horror novels yet, but Bec, of Daren Shan’s Demonata series has some haunting imagery in it. If you’re interested and have to pick only one of his books, make it Bec. Best opening and closing I’ve ever heard.

I’m not a connoisseur, but I remember when I was younger liking the shining, swan song, the dark half and a bunch of dean koontz.

Yes!!! glad you made another horror book rec vid!

I would also recommend The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons. Stephen King praised it in Danse Macabre (his non-fiction from 1981).

I forgot to add two books that are definitely worth reading: ‘I’m Thinking Of Ending Things” by Iain Reid and ‘The House On Needless Street’. I also have really gotten into Mary Kubica as excellent writing and entertainment. Her last book, “It’s Not Her’, kept me interested from beginning to end.

The shining was amazing! I never really understood why bitch was ever really considered an insult, until I read the shining. It was awesome. And one book that I consider horror/mystery is And then there were none by Agatha Christie. Some might not consider it horror because it is a mystery novel, but it feels almost supernatural until the revelation at the end. Really worth the read.

Ok I have such confidence in your lists now as I can categorically say The Exorcist is the scariest book I’ve ever read as in it’s the only book I had to throw out my bedroom door at night because I couldn’t sleep with it in the room - just found your channel and really enjoying writing up a new reading list

From this list, I have read “between two fires” and “the library at mount char”. Both were bizarre and absolutely amazing.

For a classic horror novel, Whitley Strieber's "The Wolfen" is truly scary in a few places. You get the viewpoint of the creatures and the victims in real time -- a Third Person Omniscient POV that works very well in the novel. And don't be led astray-- it''s not actually a "werewolf" book, but something much more interesting. The movie, although tolerable, is almost nothing like the book, and it does not do the book any justice at all.

I was delighted that you mentioned The Library at Mount Char. It’s one of the most original and intriguing books I’ve ever read, and I don’t know anyone else who has read it. I can say the same for The Orphan by Robert Stallman.
