The world often makes people sleepy because of wealth, position, comfort, and various pleasures in it. When the heart loves the world too much, a person can forget the purpose of life and neglect to prepare provisions for the afterlife. In this study, reminding about the disease of al-wahn, namely excessive love for the world and fear of death, and how a Muslim treats it by remembering death, increasing righteous deeds, and strengthening faith and trust in Allah.
1. Al-Wahn Disease: Love of the World and Fear of Death
The Prophet said:
"Nearly the nations crowd upon you as people who eat crowd around their meal." They asked, "Is it because we are few in number?" He replied, "No, in fact there were many of you at that time, but you were like foam on a water stream..." Asked, "What is al-wahn?" He replied, "Love the world and fear death." (HR. Abu Dawud no. 4297)
2. The Truth of World Love
Islam does not prohibit a Muslim from owning wealth and enjoying the worldly life. What is reprehensible is when the world becomes the main goal so that someone sacrifices religion and the afterlife. God said:
"And the life of the world is nothing but a deceptive pleasure." (QS. Ali 'Imran: 185)
3. Why Fear Death?
Fear of death can appear because the heart is too attached to the world and the lack of charity preparation for the afterlife. The world is ultimately more beloved than eternal life, so that courage in goodness and defense of truth becomes weak.
4. The World is Just a Stopover
The Prophet said:
"Be you in the world as if you were a stranger or a traveler." (HR. Bukhari no. 6416)
The world is a testing and stopping place, not an eternal abode.
5. How to Treat Al-Wahn Disease
Remember more about death, prepare provisions for the afterlife with knowledge and righteous deeds, and strengthen tauhid and tawakal. Allah reminds:
“And the life of this world is nothing but play and amusement.” (QS. Al-An‘am: 32)
Conclusion:
Excessive love of the world and fear of death can weaken the heart of a Muslim. The world can be owned, but it should not control the heart. A believer should make the world a means of gathering provisions towards the eternal afterlife.
