Could subtle changes in your everyday life be signs that your Parkinson’s has progressed?
Parkinson’s progression doesn’t always announce itself with one dramatic new symptom. Sometimes the changes are so gradual that we adapt before we even realize we’re adapting.
Something that used to happen automatically suddenly requires thought. Your medication still works, but the timing feels different. Walking takes more concentration. Your voice changes. Multitasking gets harder. Or maybe you can still do everything you used to do, but suddenly doing it costs you more.
In this episode, I share 7 subtle shifts that may signal your Parkinson’s has progressed, including changes in movement, medication response, walking, speech, non-motor symptoms, thinking and fatigue.
I also share a very real freezing experience I recently had while going through customs on our way to LSU.
But this is important: none of these changes by themselves prove that your Parkinson’s has progressed.
Parkinson’s fluctuates. Sleep, stress, illness, digestion, medication timing and other factors can temporarily change symptoms too. This episode is about recognizing patterns over time, not becoming frightened by one bad day.
Carmen also joins us for Carmen’s Care Partner Corner, because sometimes the person beside us notices our little adaptations before we do. And she has some advice for care partners about the difference between noticing change and becoming the “change police.” 😂
Stay through #7, because I think it may be the most overlooked shift of all, and it leads to one simple question that changed how I think about my own Parkinson’s.
💬 YOUR TURN: Which of these seven changes did you notice first? Tell me in the comments. Somebody reading your answer may realize, “Wait... me too.”
