Fabián Vargas is a Copa América champion, a multi-time champion with Boca Juniors and Internacional of Porto Alegre, a three-time national champion with América de Cali, and he joins the Colombian football podcast that seeks out the human being behind the player.
La Perseverancia isn't just a neighborhood in Bogotá; for Vargas, it's the origin of everything. It's the school where he learned what no football academy teaches: that hunger ends when it's satisfied, but the passion for glory knows no bounds. That difference, forged in the streets, in his family, in the values learned before even touching a ball, explains a career that spanned Colombia, South America, and Europe with the same intensity.
Maracaneiros, the Bogotá league, the missed opportunity to develop at Santa Fe. América de Cali and the three-peat under Jaime de La Pava that propelled him to the Colombian national team. The 2003 Copa Libertadores semifinal and the epic 4-1 victory against River Plate at the Pascual Guerrero stadium. The Copa América he won. Boca Juniors, Internacional of Porto Alegre, AEK Athens, Almería, Independiente of Avellaneda, Millonarios, Barcelona of Ecuador, Seguros La Equidad. A career built piece by piece, pitch by pitch, with conviction, memories, and the power of words.
The runner-up medal he never received on the Palogrande pitch? That no longer needs explaining. A narrative that history never quite settled.
He speaks of the 2014 World Cup with the honesty of someone who still wonders about it. Alejandro Sabella, runner-up with Argentina, told him he would be his defensive midfielder in that tournament. Pékerman never called him up. Vargas doesn't take any explanation for granted, although his presidency of ACOLFUTPRO always loomed large in the conversation.
He speaks of how admiration differs from flattery, because recognizing greatness isn't surrendering to it, but understanding why we always lose when we compete against it.
A conversation about values, difficulties, successes, and the power of speaking your dreams aloud.
