The way they sound excited about punishing their kid before they're even born was particularly jarring. Her "mommy doesn't want to spank you but there are consequences" bit, aka telling your kid they are to blame for the punishment they receive AND for upsetting the parent for punishing them on top of it... would be profoundly confusing and so hurtful for the child. These people sound sadistic and unhinged. It's actually disturbing

Fun fact that I can say as someone who has studied religious sciences (this includes all practical religions and mythology), the word rod is indeed used but in a metaphor of a shepherd taking care of his flock of sheep. If you have ever herded sheep the old-fashioned way, you know it doesn't mean beating your sheep black and blue, but using the rod to guide them, catch them if they are wandering off and risk getting lost or hurt  and protect them from predators. I suppose that if you want to spank the predators, you can technically do it. (It a joke, don't do it). The message is guide, keep track, and protect your child.
