Why is 1 so important to music?
The first harmonic is the fundamental—the reference frequency against which the rest of the harmonic series is measured. Once that fundamental becomes 1, everything else becomes a relationship to it: 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, 5:1...
And that is where harmony begins.
In this lesson I explore the musical power of the fundamental, frequency ratios, the harmonic series, and the broader idea of root, tonic and tonal center—different ways music establishes a reference point against which other notes acquire meaning.
The fundamental, chord root and tonic are not technically the same thing, but they share one profound idea: musical relationships only have meaning relative to something else.
Without a reference, there is no interval to measure, no ratio to hear, and no harmonic relationship to define.
This is the musical science underneath harmony itself.
