when the student is ready, the teacher appears. RIP Gabe, thank you for this. I've seen it before but hadn't worked on the little things and was missed the brilliant things you so matter-of-factly explain in your now eternally humble way.
You've got some of the best banjo instructional content on YouTube; I always like seeing a new video from you. I've struggled a lot with right-hand picking on the banjo, so this was really useful to watch.
Excellent advice Gabe, even for someone that’s been picking a while it’s good to revisit these things and do an honest assessment of your right hand. That’s the motor so you gotta get that horsepower flowing lol
For me, when I was a beginner, about 48 years ago...LOL...the right hand had tension in it since my brain/finger muscle-memory werent totally connected with each other, even though I could play very fast easily; after an hour or so I could feel tension in my hand, but I could still play fast, just with tension. This eventually went away after I had been playing about 6 years playing almost nearly every day. I would say to just keep practicing and ur right hand will eventually feel free and relaxed.
Gabe! excellent! Nothing useless in your thoughts, my banjo picking friend. I've always enjoy your videos, your banjo picking, your very "insightful thoughts", and your warm and friendly attitude. Keep up the good work! Best wishes, 🪕🔥 🎙🎶🎶🎶
I've had my banjo for less than a week and this helped a LOT. "Holding the tennis ball" let me hit the 1st string by bending my finger more towards the tip rather than moving from the base of my finger. This let my middle finger move independently from my ring. Suddenly the plant fingers just stayed down and out of the way on their own; not even an consideration. The pointier finger picks also helped me to stop scraping the string, which was a constant issue with my middle finger.

Here are my, for the most part, useless thoughts about right hand technique. Enjoy!
