Gudmann & Gyda

The subject of this video is birds-in-flight photography. Capturing sharp photos of fast-flying birds is difficult, and here are some tips and tricks to get the shot. This was shot in one go from memory as Einar Gudmann was photographing puffins, guillemots, and razorbills. It is not meant to be an exhaustive coverage, rather the most important tips for mastering birds in flight.

The rifle tips are something I've always used since learning to shoot when I was a kid. It's very helpful for photography or binoculars as well. Great tips. I wish I had a puffin colony near where I live!

So good to see you both back on YouTube. Great advice on tracking and photographing BIF. Shutter speed is crucial as well as ISO. Going to try stepping down to f8 after watching your video. All the best to you and Gyda and am looking forward to seeing more of your Icelandic photography.

Cameras like the Z7II it also helps to pre-focus on close to the distance you will be taking the photo if at all possible. That camera can't be any worse than the D810 I'm still using with the Nikon 200-500. I delete a ton of out of focus photos. Good light & being close but not to close the camera does much better. I wish I had 10 fps & a max of 14 would be ideal sometimes. Good to see you post agin.

I think high frame rates can be truly useful especially when photographing small birds (I know that there is fewer ones found in Iceland) or when a bird (eg. a tern) dives from air into water. Sure, the downside is that you have to browse through large number of photos to find the ones with the best poses.

All very good advice. A good reminder about the thing I often forget. Put the EVF eyepiece on your head to help stabilize it. I will have to also try your elbow on the knee advice.
