After the liberation of the central and southern parts of Bessarabia, the most important operation carried out by Romania on the Eastern Front was the 4th Army's campaign to conquer Odessa, carried out from the beginning of August until mid-October 1941. From a strictly military point of view, the strategic necessity of the battle for Odessa is beyond any doubt. The city represented the main enemy base for land, naval and air operations, located only 150 km from the Danube Delta, and 400 km from the oil area, from where Soviet forces could easily intervene to annihilate the Romanian and German victory achieved shortly before.
