It would help a lot to pack your van so there's only 100kg on the towball so you save 200kgs on the gvm.

Towing capacity BS is not new, Toyota were actually the only ones doing it right originally. That is why they limited the light weight vehicles to 2.5T, you never reached GCM, Axel limits, GVM etc but it made them look weak because the competition was advertising 3-3.5T but they were hiding the fact you can't tow that much without stripping the car of weight, not realistic.

No one should be towing more than 2.5T in any light weight 4WD, period.

Would not tow anything heavier than the vehicle itself anyway

I learned one big thing from this video.
Australia makes the car owner do way too much math to drive a 4wd.😂😅😂😂

You made my mind up. I'll get an Grenadier.

Heck, just for fun include a 1HD-FTE 100 series and make it a landcruiser generations comparison test.

The Kurb weight includes the 80L main fuel tank and the 30L sub-tank, for a total fuel capacity of 110L. And it includes the 17L AdBlue tank.  So no need to subtract that from your Payload.

Hey Ronny, please do the same test with y62, 200, 300 and Grenadier. Cheers

Did you do a test like this with the Grenadier?

Are you really going to stack up fully grown men in the back? Towing a caravan..! LOL

Nice video! Well explained. Its very simple - the weight of your car is the maximum weight you should tow

you should take the 4wd to a weight bridge to be more accurate as many kerb weights include a 75kg driver and fluids

Toyota was forced to compete with others who increased the towing capacity as a sales campaign against them. Ford Ranger was making it a huge selling point a few years back that they had a larger towing capacity than the Hilux at the time.

The Prado Hospital bought a Y62 for towing rather than a 250. That says a lot !!

I love your channel, Ronny. So detailed and without any biases as compared to others where they are no more than an extension of the marketing departments of the brands they represent.

Abit of time spent with the Prado GCM.. Ive never seen 4 / 5 adults pull up to a camp.. its always a couple grey nomads or a family with younger children.
Good vid.

Ronny, doesn’t the kerb weight  include fuel and Add Blue in the figures?

Not bad when you get down to it. What helped the most for the efficiency? I would say the 8 speed transmission. I still remember when I had my 2019 Ranger a.few years back. It came with a 10 Speed Automatic and a little 2.3L EcoBoost to power the big truck that had a towing capacity of 7500 LBS. Now I did get a little close to that capacity once, but even when I wasn't close I noticed it did well. Having the close gear box and the Turbocharger made all the difference to hold speed going up a hill. I'm sure the same effect took place here. That said I will agree that the total capacity is a bit too much overall.

Brilliant video. Nice details and explanations. Love it
