Most people over sixty assume a clean home means more time on their knees. In many Japanese homes, it simply does not work that way. Here are eleven small habits that do the work for you, and the last one quietly holds all the others together. Number eleven begins at the front door.

When I was a boy, I thought taking off your shoes at the entrance was only about manners. It was years before I understood it was also the easiest cleaning method in the whole house. Think about where most of the dirt on your floors actually comes from. Very little of it is made indoors. It arrives on the soles of shoes: fine grit, damp soil, bits of leaves, and that grey dust you keep wiping from the hallway without knowing where it came from. So give your home a small landing zone.

A mat just inside the door, a low bench or a sturdy chair so you can sit down to change, and a pair of indoor slippers waiting right there. Sitting matters, because now you are not bending or balancing on one foot. Within a week or two you will notice the hallway stays lighter in colour and the floors feel smoother underfoot. You have not cleaned more. You have simply stopped letting the dirt in. And once less dirt comes in, the next question is what you do with the little that remains.
