Studio Wildlife

This is hands down the best projector for artists that I have tried. It's compact, high quality and affordable. Plus it's really easy to use and compatable with an IPad.

Leonardo da Vinci did use projection! He used concave mirrors to project and trace his subjects. Many grand masters have used projections, Johannes Vermeer is particularly known for his use of the camera obscura to capture his “photographic” perfect perspectives. To “cheat” is to break the rules, but in art there are no rules.

I used to tape my water colour paper to a tv to ensure I got the eyes mouth and ears in the right place.

Thank you for sharing! My understanding is that Leonardo DID use a projector 😁 called camera obscura.

Wow i was looking on Amazon before i decided to look for recommendations outside of Amazon and this type of projector wasnt even mentioned for drawing. Thanks for the help!

I think the point you make about making sure your drawing skills are up to scratch and not relying on the projector is a great piece of advice. I want to use a projector to scale up my own sketches and this video really helped me choose thanks.

This is a great video and really so, so helpful. I am just a hobby artist and have thought about getting a small projector for literally years, but didn't want to spend money getting the wrong thing that wouldn't work.
Now I can get the right thing and get started producing big scale masterpieces !
Well, maybe not masterpieces, but at least something bigger than an A4 sketch.

FYI Leonardo did have and use a projector. It wasn't electric, but using a photographic trick he could project an image. The guy was a genius you know. This was covered in many of my art classes in college.

Thanks for running through this mate. I spent all day trying to upscale my reference onto a large 30x40 cavas yesterday, and I still only managed to get half of the sketch down, need to continue with it today, phew... A projector would save so much time, and cost for time spent on a piece. Could be way more productive.

To quote David Hockney, “Optics don’t make marks!” Using optical technology is definitely not cheating, as many have already said the old masters used optical equipment available to them. You can even see some the mistakes if you know what to look for!
