The older generation gets mellow and makes guidelines expecting them to be rules. Then the new generation comes and challenges all of those by force, cunning and ruthlessness. When the new gen win depending on how long they rule, they make guidelines and start expecting them to be treated like rules. Cycle repeats itself. Avon himself was Marlo to alot of older people. We as the audience see Barksdale at their peak, while Stringer speaking to Prop said that alot of blood was shed to get the Towers in the first place. So much value and money made that they left other street corners to the lesser crews

Marlo intro scene was to show the difference between the old mindset and the new. Avons intro is him scolding D for killin when it wasnt necessary. not that hes against it. just that it should only be used when necessary. Marlos scene shows hes willing to kill as he sees fit. not when its necessary.

edit: hence why he made them both kill the same people for different reasons. Avon offs a workin man(for testifying) , marlo offs a workin woman, avon offs a security guard, marlo offs a security guard... etc etc. hence same thing, just for different reasons.

I like that Avon and Marlo scene, because of subtle insults like calling Marlo a "natural businessman" (Avon both hates "businessmen" after seeing how his best friend, Stringer, fucked him over because Stringer was a businessman first, gangster second; Marlo wants to be the king of Baltimore's criminals, not a "businessman") and Avon thinking ahead of Marlo. You can see it in how Wood Harris acts. Avon knows Marlo will get rid of Prop Joe (great for Avon!) and will also fuck up and get caught (even greater for Avon!) which gives him an easy, welcome playing field once he gets out of prison, even if Avon doesn't have any of his old crew around.
Avon thinks big picture, Marlo thinks about right now.

"Why ain't in your repertoire no more" is definitely a 10/10 line😂

Avon is the kind of guy that gangsters want to be, and you can tell that people in his world look up to him in some way. For all his evil and brutality, he has a soul and a level of community he wants to build. He has tons of charisma and seems to enjoy life a lot more than Marlo. He wants the good life for him and his crew, the game is a means to an end to some extent.

But nobody wants to be Marlo because he’s completely soulless. He’s so singularly focused on the game that he’s turned himself into a hollow husk, one that lays bare how awful the game is when there’s nothing to live for outside of it. Marlo wants to win so that he can win and so that others can see that he won. For him, winning is the end itself. People see through that. It’s like someone in a fighting game who finds some really cheap strategy to win instead of playing the game straight up. You need some level of honor to inspire true lasting respect on the street….fear and ruthlessness alone will only take guys like Marlo so far before they collapse.

18:45 there's an interview with Wood Harris in which he tells a story about this scene. Apparently they were waiting to step in the shot and film this walk, and as they were waiting they saw a human bone popping out of the ground. He said he was so shocked by it and it happened just right before starting filming he said he couldn't get it out of his mind as he was walking and his somewhat disturbed expression comes as a result of it. It's certainly an iconic scene and whatever the reason was he did nail it lol

I love the barksdales cause they would kill you but only if you violate them on the drugs but marlo would kill just for "talking back"  oh please somebody like Marlo on the streets he would have beeen put down
