About the Performing Ren

Ahou-ren

Nonki-ren
A member of the Tokushima Prefecture Awaodori Association, Nonki-ren carries on the tradition of the “Nonki-style” of Awaodori. Its performance preserves this traditional lineage while expressing the joy and energy of the dance.

Awa-ren
Founded in 1957, Awa-ren is known for its powerful and free-spirited men's dance and graceful women's dance. It is also associated with the original zigzag dance style, accompanied by music that skillfully balances dynamic and restrained passages.

Yakko-ren
Yakko-ren was founded in 1950 in Hanoura, Anan City, in southern Tokushima Prefecture. With members spanning many generations, the ren builds upon traditions inherited from its predecessors while incorporating new elements and sharing the joy of Awaodori with audiences.

About Tokushima City Awaodori “THE AWAODORI”

Awaodori is a traditional Japanese performing art with a history spanning more than 400 years and is one of the defining cultural traditions of Tokushima.

Several theories exist regarding its origins, including one linking the dance to celebrations surrounding the construction of Tokushima Castle and another tracing its roots to Bon and Buddhist ancestral dances.

Tokushima City Awaodori “THE AWAODORI” transforms central Tokushima into a celebration of dance and music every August. In 2026, the major outdoor performance areas operate from August 12 through 15, filling the city with the rhythms, movement, and extraordinary energy of Awaodori.
