What They Didn’t Tell You About Super Mario Bros

Given how Super Mario Bros is one of the most popular games ever made, you might think you know everything there is to know about it. But did you know that Lakitu is supposed to be much harder, but a programming error prevents the code from working? And the screen is not supposed to keep moving when you’re near the warp zone?

Truly honored to get a shout-out from one of the most solid YouTubers we know! Thank you and congrats on 50K Pojr! Here's to 100K!

The Lakito "glitch" argument reminds me of the double spike "bug" argument in Sonic 1 and how some people would get all angry if you refer to it as a bug instead of a behavior... except here I honestly believe this is intentional, I'm sure Lakito's behavior started as a bug but the fact Nintendo still to this day program him like this imo is proof they just prefer it this way and I really hate hacks and fan remakes that force the more aggressive behavior like it's an objective improvement.

Sometimes developers just run out of time and can't make any more adjustments to their code and they have to release it as-is, as long as it's not too buggy. They HATE having to push back a release date because a lot of things have to be adjusted, including manufacturing runs, shipping partner windows and such. This is why, also, remnants of unused code are often found in the ROM code.

My guess on the "P" flower would be a punch flower explaining the propeller punch sprite artwork.

The development of Mario World would be an interesting video topic

2:44 - "...allow Mario to jump on Koopas because it made more sense": This is deep game design. SMB is all about jump. You jump to avoid dying on the first enemy. You jump to hit blocks for power ups. You jump to break blocks for secrets and opening new pathways. You jump to kill enemies. You jump to reach the flag pole. You jump to enter pipes. You jump to get to vines. You even have to jump to throw fireballs -- since they are aimed downwards, you have to increase your height to aim. You have to "jump" to swim -- you don't just aim in a direction of desire. Everything in SMB is jumping.

Good on you for crediting your sources.

In SM All Stars there's a programming error that has Mario/Luigi momentarily stick to blocks you are breaking. It is present in both SMB1 and Lost Levels

cheep cheeps originally being something else tracks with what Miyamoto said about that enemy design being a suggestion from a coworker rather than something he came up with himself.

1:46 Luigi actually debuted in Mario Bros. for the Game & Watch, which was released around three months before the arcade of the same name. The arcade game was in development first though.

Also, congrats on 50K subs! 🎉 Can’t wait for that Q&A video.

11:43 If you look closely, you'll notice Nintendo also forgot to remove the rope sprite from the end block on one of the bridges.

Something I see no one mention is that on the hand drawn big mario sprite sheet his stoping sprites would have had sparks coming from behind/the direction his head is facing him not many people mention that :)

gotta love the screenshot of some circa-2012-looking JavaScript (ie web code) as the “source code” b-roll 😂

5:59 looks like that scrapped Propeller power-up would later be used in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

@jonathanlamb7341 1 month ago

The animation you describe as "ducking" looks more like a "pulling something from the ground" animation as in Mario 2/Doki Doki Panic

pojr, your pronunciation Lakitu (Latiku) has to be the best yet! I used to be a douche when it came to stuff like this. But, over the years, I've learned to settle down, and enjoy the ways other people say the names of these video game characters. It's what they grew up with. and, honestly, yours is the easiest to say! I enjoy the content you produce. And the cheesiness that you add to the mix. From the goofy smile with braces, to the goofy smile without, it always means a good time. It always brightens my day, anyway! There are lots of channels covering the same stuff. But, the presentation makes the difference. And you, my dude, are keeping us, at least me, interested. I look forward to your videos!

Congratulations on 50k, POJR! Super hyped seeing your channel's growth.

smb has always been one of my favorites. i like seeing how it changed over time and what got scrapped. The games controls were even different at first. you'd have used up on the d-pad to jump instead of the a button! overall, great video pojr!
