Sunday Morning Coming Down is another great song by Kris Kristofferson

Kris was a Rhodes Scholar for his poetry! 😊

I love Kris Kristopherson.  Look up the history of this song.  He and Janis had a brief fling and she recorded this without him knowing it.  She died and he heard it on the radio for the first time.  He apparently listened to it over and over so he could hear it without crying.   This one is good - but Janis made it her own.   Oh and one story is that early in his career he thought he had "lost" his ability to write.  His manager or someone gave him the name (she was a real person who worked in the record company) to write a song about.  He'd just returned from Louisiana (where he would go to fly workers out over the water to work on the oil rigs with a helicopter) and came up with this song.   Don't know how true it is but it's a good story.

Kris "Borrowed" a helicopter from his National Guard unit and flew to Johnny Cash's house, landed on the lawn and asked Johnny to listen to "Sunday Morning Coming Down" with the hope that Johnny would record it and the rest is history. Kris Kristofferson's work has a tactile nature to it, you can feel the warm and tender body next to his, waking up hung over looking through the hamper or standing on the side of the road in the rain. You can "feel" as well as see the scene.

Kris was a master poet.  He even taught English Literature at West Point with a specialty in William Blake.  My other favorite songs of his were Sunday Morning Coming Down which was a hit for Johnny Cash, Sammi Smith's Help Me Make It Through The Night, Ray Price's For The Good Times and his own song and my favorite Loving Her Was Easier which is incredibly sad, especially his version on the Old Grey Whistle Test.

Anything BUT a "little known song" in the US!!! We all knew Kris penned it, he was an amazing artist, love him in “A Star Is Born”!!!!

“Little known”???  One of the great songs of all time.

While everybody out here singing lullabies to their babies, I was singing this to my little red haired angel.❤

You've got to hear his " Help Me Make it Through the Night".

Kris Kristofferson was a true Renaissance man. Besides being one of the best songwriters ever, he was a former  Army captain and helicopter pilot, a Rhodes Scholar with a master's degree in English lit from Oxford, a Golden Globe-winning actor and a standout football player, rugby star and boxer. Take five minutes to read his Wikipedia bio if you want to really be amazed at what he accomplished in life. Kris and Janis Joplin were lovers for a brief time and she recorded Me and Bobby McGee as a surprise gift for Kris. Unfortunately, she died of an overdose before he ever got to hear her version of the song. It became her biggest hit ever.

Kris Kristofferson was born in Brownsville, Texas,  his father was a United States Air Force general who pushed his son to a military career. Kris was a Golden Gloves boxer and went to Pomona College in California. From there, he earned a Rhodes scholarship to study literature at Oxford University. He ultimately joined the United States Army and achieved the rank of captain. He became a helicopter pilot, which served him well later. In 1965, he resigned his commission to pursue songwriting. He had just been assigned to become a teacher at USMA West Point. He got a job sweeping floors in Nashville studios. There he met Johnny Cash, who initially took some of his songs but ignored them. He was also working as a commercial helicopter pilot at the time. He got Cash's attention when he landed his helicopter in Cash's yard and gave him some more tapes. Cash then recorded Kristofferson's "Sunday Morning Coming Down", which was voted the 1970 Song of the Year by the Country Music Association. His family disowned him for turning to music.

Bobbi is a girl, when sung by Kris. (every night she kept me from the cold) "thumbed a diesel down" is hitchiking on a transport truck. Harpoon is, as you judged, a harmonica. Dorsey Burnett is a country music writer and musician. "Freedom's just another word" is tied for first place in Kris' lexicon, beside "my cleanest dirty shirt" in Sunday Morning Coming Down.  --BAK

Always good to hear the writers version, but yeah Janis owns this song.

Joplin's version is amazing.  I think it's so iconic that few realize Kristofferson wrote it.  But I love listening to Kris sing as well.  My favorites of his are "Why me Lord" and "help me make it through the night" especially the version done with this then wife Rita Coolidge.

You should do the highwaymen doing "The Highman"...country super group featuring Kris with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings

Kris was a Rhoades scholar and was madly in love with the poetry of William Blake while he studied at Oxford. His lyrics are extremely poetic as you'd expect.

I think Kris is one of the greatest lyricists of all time! Try reacting to Sunday Morning Coming Down - there's no song anywhere that so achingly conveys regret, loneliness and depression!

Kris' recorded version from his first album has a different feel than this up tempo version. I like this, I love the version on his first album. Kris was a Renaissance man with a very interesting life,

Kris Kristofferson was a Rhoads Scholar who quit school to go to Nashville and one day cleaning the ashtrays in the studio met Johnny Cash. He changed the way songs were written - so honest and raw. A true poet. Yes! Yes! Yes! Sunday Morning Coming Down. Johnny Cash made that one standard in his repertoire.

When Janis Joplin had this hit song, I worked as a teller at a bank. Our head teller was a middle aged  black lady named
Bobbie McGee. We used to sing her a line or two as we walked by her teller cage. She endured our
singing good naturedly. She was a wonderful person. Every time I hear this song I think if her.❤

Kris was a Rhodes Scholar and a great songwriter. He also was an actor.  His friend Janis Joplin made this one a huge hit.  ("Busted flat" means broke/no money.)  As for coming to America in the '70s, I can personally highly recommend it.  If you find a way, let me know.  ; )
