Lionel’s Diana photographs are spreading across the house. Claire has volunteered to tackle the château’s neglected jobs while he works on the book. Four big jobs, one afternoon… and a rather optimistic idea of what she can manage alone.
An enormous €50 sideboard needs moving, our bathroom still hasn’t got a door, and putting up curtains is supposedly a two-minute job. Meanwhile, every tea break draws us back into Lionel’s archive—and the photographs beyond the familiar magazine covers.
Among them is a sequence of Princess Diana preparing for a speech: the nerves, the laughter and an exchange with Henry Kissinger. One photograph might make a cover, but the surrounding frames tell a much fuller story. These are the moments Lionel is bringing together in his book, alongside his memories of photographing her.
Today, we’re also opening the book’s interest list for the first time.

How are we ever going to be able to afford this fabulous book that is coming. I think it is extremely generous of you to be doing a book and not selling them to the tabloids one by one. I would have thought publishers would be beating a path to your door to get publishing rights...

Today felt like one of those slightly odd days where we were both completely absorbed in very different things.
Claire was hanging a couple-of-hundred-year-old bathroom door, moving furniture, putting up curtains and mowing vast quantities of grass.
I was sitting in a room surrounded by boxes of photographs of Diana.
And the strange thing is, going through them doesn’t feel like simply looking at old pictures. So many of those contact sheets contain whole little sequences that were never published — the moments before and after the photograph everyone knows, the nerves, the laughter, the conversations and all the tiny human bits in between.
That’s really becoming the heart of the book for me.
We’re going to make the Diana book through crowdfunding, and you can now register your interest using the link below. There’s nothing to buy at this stage — it simply helps us understand how many of you might want to be part of making it happen.

But we’d also genuinely love to know: when you look back through old photographs, is it the “important” pictures you treasure most, or the completely ordinary ones that bring everything flooding back?
