Rice prices in the Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have skyrocketed, reaching ₹80 to ₹90 per kg, placing a severe financial burden on middle-class families and daily wage earners. Driven by the lingering El Niño impact, declining paddy cultivation areas (including a drop of over 4.26 lakh hectares in Telangana), artificial shortages, and government procurement shifts, fine-quality rice (Sanna Biyyam) prices have surged drastically within just two months. While farmers cultivating fine rice are seeing quintal prices cross ₹3,000, market experts warn that retail rates could soon touch a century (₹100/kg) by next summer unless immediate measures are taken.
