Job seekers keep getting told the same advice: network more, improve your communication skills, use AI, complete your Indeed profile, activate your network, and somehow “stand out” from hundreds of other applicants doing exactly the same thing.

So how do people actually get hired in the 2026 job market?

In this video, we're looking at some of the increasingly useless job-search and career advice being given to people trying to find work right now.

One video promises the six skills employers “actually want” — things like communication, collaboration, creative thinking and problem solving.

Another solution is apparently to start your own business and hire yourself.
Then we get AI-powered job-search advice that somehow turns into completing your Indeed profile.

And when new graduates ask how to break into a difficult job market, the answer becomes the corporate classic:

“Activate your network.”

Professors. Classmates. Your parents' friends. LinkedIn connections. Anybody who might know somebody who knows somebody.

Which brings us to the actual hiring tier list.
Because if networking is supposedly the secret, there is one form of networking that remains extremely effective:

Your dad knowing a guy.

So we're ranking everything from CEO offspring and executive relatives to referrals, old workplace connections, LinkedIn networking, spraying applications across job boards and the classic advice to walk into a company with a résumé and demand a handshake.

The job market is difficult enough without telling every applicant to follow exactly the same generic advice and somehow expecting all of them to “stand out.”

There is no correlation between competence and success anymore. I know plenty of hard working, skilled talented people that are forever stuck on t he lower rungs eking out a living. I also have met countless asshats that don't know a single thing about the portion of the company they are supposed to be in charge of but they make $400,000 just to exist and grind production to a halt when their dad forces them to come up with "an idea" to justify their position.

I have never been good at networking. To me it's embarrassing to ask people if they can help with a job.
Yet, I managed to retire from 30+ years in IT at a 6 figure salary.
I could never get hired today..

My last long term job I ran the shipping the department, did the purchasing for the whole company, did the tech support for my department included ordering and setup. Used my personal vehicle for work tasks. I was doing much more then my job description. I was classified as a shipping clerk.

“We need to end nepotism” is going to be said. That won’t stop the crazy amounts of under- hiring, excessive c-suite pay, lack of employment protections and real Reemployment assistance, and valuing shareholders over employees, imo

Networking is actually massively important.

What they don’t tell you is it takes 5-10 years minimum for most people to develop an effective network and you have to put a lot of time and energy into people who mostly could not give a care about you.

As a dad who neither is the guy or knows the guy, I am trying to save up enough money so that I can hire my kid as my house manager or something. I entered the job market through the F tier back when it was still possible to do so.
