It’s scary reading the threads on Reddit and I’m sure those experiences are real. Truly scared and discouraging. I’m at a crossroads.

The downside of nursing is 80% of time is spent on documentation. Many men are choosing it simply because of the schedule 3 days on/4 days off and the pay of $ 30-40 an hour is not that bad. Many are leaving hospital work now for agency work doing home visits etc. which is less stressful and you can work at your own pace.

Fifty plus years ago I completed my BSN after being an Army medic. There were few men in nursing back then so I was bombarded with questions why, my answer: I was looking to marry a doctor 😉.  I just really enjoyed helping people…over a career there have been plenty of ups and downs as healthcare has changed a lot, not for the better.  But, one thing has remained constant — there are people who will always need compassionate care.  For those just starting I wish you the best, for those hanging on…keep hanging in…people need you.

I’m about to start my CNA program because I’ve been interested in going into nursing for a while, and I’ve been concerned about the horror stories I’ve been seeing online about the job market. I was in tech for a hot minute and the constant layoff cycles were no joke.

Kudos to you, man. You said it right, brother. My takeaway from this clip is finding "the sweet spot." I have been a nurse for almost 16 years. This profession requires upgrading from being a bedside nurse to master level education, which provides more opportunities for the "sweet spot."

It’s a good path as long as those new grads keep quitting after 2-5 years of burnout. As long as it continues to be a revolving door then there will always be room for more people. If nurses never left their field it would eventually end up like Comp Sci where it’s saturated. Maybe my outlook is a bit more cynical though. But the advantage of people consistently leaving leaves more opportunity for the next generation. Rinse and repeat.

Thanks man. I have my CNA clincals in a few days and I’m a little nervous. I hope I’m doing the right thing by starting off as a CNA because I want the experience before deciding to move up.

I started school last year but it became clear quite quickly I couldnt manage my solo apartment, 2 cats, and rising grocery costs. I was in Philadelphia which is pretty cheap but I worked as a server and some months were great while others werent. I left the US in frustration swearing I would never return. My 26th birthday is in a couple days and my fifth year sober is shortly after. I have to come back to the US to file bankruptcy. All of these things have me reconsidering my decision to leave the US forever. Also, I wanted to be a nurse for the last 10 years, but I had addicition and nonviolent crime cases I had to manage and now I'm reaching the point where I can expunge most things and by the time I finish pre reqs I could be applying for nursing school with a completely clean slate. I'm a little less worried about the field, well, I am, but I also have been through a lot already and my years as a CNA were some of my greatest. I want to get involved with unions and organizing and advocate for my fellow nurses and do something to help change, even if I don't get where I want to, at least getting things closer so the next gen has better chances.. anyway, I'm rambling now.. Basically leaving the US helped me to escape the cost living, but didn't spare me the cost of living my dream of helping others. I know how exploitative hospitals are but after bouncing around a few fields almost everything looks exploitative tbh.

My daughter will start nursing school right out of highschool, direct-entry, and is concerned about the clinicals...NO CAR.

It's been worth it for me so far. I'm working at a drug rehab. Luckily as an amputee it isnt physically demanding like hospitals and nursing homes can be.
