This year, CERN celebrates the sixtieth anniversary of its foundation in 1954. This is an important opportunity to review the European Laboratory's long journey and its most important scientific achievements: the discovery of neutral currents by the Gargamelle experiment in the early 1970s, the discovery of intermediate vector bosons by the UA1 and UA2 experiments, the determination of the number of light neutrino families by the LEP experiments, and the recent discovery of the Higgs boson by the ATLAS and CMS experiments.
