Magneto alignment using the magneto outline.

To achieve maximum high voltage across the entire crankshaft speed range, the contacts must open at the moment when maximum current is induced in the primary circuit. At this point, the flywheel magnetic system axis is offset by a certain angle from the coil core axis in the direction of motor rotation. This angle is called the magneto outline (offset); for the ML-10-2s magneto, its value is 7° + 2°. For most magneto components—the flywheel, breaker cam, breakers, and magnetic circuits—dimension mismatches affect the accuracy of the contact opening position. To ensure greater accuracy, the magneto must be aligned using the outline.

Before adjustment, marks must be made on the magneto base and flywheel. Marks on the base (opposite each magnetic core) should be placed along the axis of the coil cores, and a mark on the flywheel should be placed at an angle of 7° clockwise from the magnetic system axis, looking at the flywheel from below. It is convenient to use a gear ring for marking. The angle between two teeth on the ring is approximately 6°. Before adjusting, set the base to the full throttle position, then tighten the side base mounting screw so that it remains stationary while operating the breakers.

Now, carefully, avoiding a tight fit on the cone, attach the flywheel and, rotating it clockwise, align the mark on the flywheel with one of the marks on the base. Remove the flywheel, loosen the breaker mounting screw, and move the breaker until the end of the pusher touches the surface of the cam, but the contacts have not yet opened. Tighten the breaker mounting screw in this position. When attaching the breaker, ensure that it is rotated clockwise as far as possible within the guide groove clearance. Place a strip of tissue paper between the contacts and gently rotate the breaker with a screwdriver until the contacts open. The strip of tissue paper will be released when the breaker begins to open. When rotating the breaker around the mounting point, the adjusting stroke of the plunger is small, so it is not always possible to achieve the correct opening moment (for example, if the PCB plunger was not positioned close enough to the cam surface).

While holding the housing to prevent movement (and therefore misalignment), tighten the breaker mounting screw. Before moving on to the next breaker, check the adjustment: rotate the flywheel until the adjusted contact opens.

If the adjustment is correct, the misalignment of the flywheel and base marks at the start of opening should not exceed 1.5 mm. The position of the magneto elements with the outline correctly installed is shown in Fig. 47.

When adjusting the magneto, the gap in the breakers can fluctuate between 0.3 and 0.6 mm at the initial moment of contact opening. The moment of contact opening can also be determined using a light bulb and a flashlight battery by connecting the breaker to the circuit.
