- Plays the only recorded sound of Venus, ever
- Talks over it

Venus is so overlooked. Glad the Soviets were able to capture some data before it ended.

The Soviets were known for building stuff - tanks, rifles, etc. - that could continue functioning after taking absurd amounts of abuse. That ability came in handy here.

Tell the US there is oil on venus, they will be spaceshiping democracy in a heart beat.

What The Soviets Found On Venus : heat, pressure and rocks

The amount of engineering and skills it required to build something and capture some of these high res pictures back in 1970's is just impressive.

The Soviets really did an amazing job given the technology of the day!

There’s no such thing as failure if you learned something from it and didn’t give up

@Viralatus 9 months ago

I'm glad the Soviet Union didn't give up.

You should start by saying the russians were THE FIRST and THE ONLY ONE who mastered the landing on Venus. No other nation ever did that - and the fact they managed such fantastic achievement at that time make the deed even more impressive.

“They had no idea how bad things were going to get.”

Next words: “Artificial Intelligence”

😂

this was the 1960s..... imagine how far we would have gotten if instead of dick-measuring competition and terror, the u.s.s.r and the u.s.a worked together to tackle and explore space. so many resources and opportunities wasted still.
hats off to the Venera scientists and engineers who have brought us the very first photos of an alien neighbor planet all the way back in 1975.... incredible.

First Spaceship on Venus … to … the last spaceship on Venus …

Interesting mission you missed: Vega 1&2, developed by the Soviets and France and landed in 1985. It included a lander identical to early Venera ones but also balloons which were released at an altitude of around 50km and floated around venus for ~2 days (much longer than 2 hours!), recording atmospheric data as it went. Not only did both balloons traverse 30% of Venus' circumference where the temperature is between 27-37C, but arguably they achieved the first artificial flight on another planet.

I think every single picture taken from another planet breathtaking, simply because it's such an huge and incredible achievement by humankind. It's so unbelievable, almost magic, to know that an artifact made by us has managed to be in such distant worlds, it's like we went there, through our work, our ingenuity. We all own the space explorers (Soviets, Americans, Europeans - Cassini-Huygens' footage of Titan -, Japanese, Chinese, Indians...) an imense thank you.
