Most camper van bathrooms use a retractable shower door, and the Nautilus is one of the most common choices. But for our bathroom, it created two problems: it would take several inches out of the walkway, and the translucent material wouldn't provide the privacy we wanted.
So instead, we installed a solid tambour shower door designed to turn the corner and disappear alongside the bathroom wall. The concept solved our two biggest requirements, but fitting a tambour door into such a tight camper van bathroom created challenges we didn't anticipate.
The flexible track couldn't make the tight 90-degree turn our layout needed. That forced us to extend the track beyond the shower pan, modify the floor insert, and find a way to preserve as much of the walkway as possible. The geometry also created a privacy gap that required one final modification after the original installation.
This episode follows the complete tambour door installation, why we chose it instead of a Nautilus retractable shower door, the problems we encountered, and the changes that ultimately made this unconventional camper van bathroom door work.
Our installation is unusually constrained. If you have another four to six inches beside your bathroom opening for the door to slide into, you may be able to install a tambour shower door without many of the modifications required in our van.
