China’s J-15T Is Changing Aircraft Carrier Race - Inside Its Production
China’s J-15T is becoming a key part of the country’s rapidly evolving aircraft carrier capability — but how did China develop and produce a carrier-based fighter capable of operating from the new Fujian aircraft carrier so quickly?
The J-15T is more than an upgraded version of China’s original J-15. It was redesigned for catapult operations, with reinforced landing gear, a launch bar, an arresting hook, folding wings, new avionics, an AESA radar, and the domestic WS-10 engine.
But the most interesting part may be how China built it.
Instead of starting from a clean sheet, Shenyang Aircraft Corporation was able to reuse an existing airframe, production infrastructure, suppliers, manufacturing experience, and engineering knowledge developed through the J-15, J-11, and J-16 programs.
At the same time, China developed the J-15T alongside the Fujian carrier and tested key carrier systems on land before bringing them together at sea.

That combination of existing industrial capacity, parallel development, and domestic technology helped China move the J-15T from development into carrier operations remarkably quickly.
And the implications go beyond one fighter.
The J-15T is part of a much larger transition — from China’s ski-jump carriers to electromagnetic catapult operations, and from a single carrier fighter to an increasingly integrated carrier aviation system.
