Understanding sapphire clarity is one of the most important steps in choosing the right stone. In this video, Affordable Gems breaks down our sapphire clarity grading scale and explains exactly how colored gemstones are graded for clarity.
Unlike diamonds, colored gemstones including sapphires are not graded under magnification. Instead, clarity is evaluated with the unaided eye. The sapphire is held about 12 inches from the eye and gently tilted to check for visible inclusions, and only the crown of the stone is considered, not the pavilion or backside.
Based on this method, sapphires are classified into eye-level clarity grades:
Eye Clean: the highest clarity offered, appearing completely clean to the naked eye with no visible inclusions, though minor features may exist under magnification.
Very Slightly Included: very tiny inclusions may appear under close inspection or when the sapphire is tilted in certain directions.
Slightly Included: small inclusions are visible to the naked eye.
Moderately Included: inclusions are clearly visible and more noticeable within the stone.
Included: more affordable, though significant inclusions are easily seen and may affect the sapphire's overall appearance.
Our proprietary grading system makes it easy to compare clarity and filter to your preferred option, so you can select a sapphire that matches your preferences and budget. For more questions on inclusions, contact us at Affordable Gems.
