Seminar summary:
Long-acting tuberculosis drugs could improve treatment outcomes in South Africa, where there is high prevalence of HIV and TB co-infection and high attrition from standard TB treatment, but potential benefits must be weighed against costs. We used a microsimulation
model to compare scenarios where a long-acting TB treatment would provide clinical benefit and be cost-effective compared with standard TB treatment for people with HIV in South Africa. We found that cost-effectiveness could be achieved if the long-acting treatment regimen maintains high efficacy at reasonable cost, especially when disengagement from standard oral treatment is high.

Presenter bio:
Krishna Reddy is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a practicing pulmonary and critical care physician at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, USA. He studies TB, HIV, and tobacco, both individually and in combination. The
goal of his research is to provide evidence- and model-based approaches to clinical decision-making and public health policy. He applies methods of simulation modeling, epidemiology, and cost-effectiveness analysis to evaluate clinical and economic outcomes.
