Olesya Melnychenko is a former prisoner of war.

The paramedic was captured by the Russians in Mariupol after the Ukrainian military was ordered to leave Azovstal.

She was held in Olenivka and Taganrog for more than eight months. Olesya recalls the terrible conditions of detention, beatings, and physical and moral abuse.

She tells how the Russian military put her in a cage and humiliated her, allowing themselves to touch her without consent. In December 2022, Olesya returned from captivity during an exchange.

After rehabilitation, she returned to serve in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The woman spoke about her experiences in captivity in an interview with Margarita Galich.
